The manuscripts were said to originate from the time of Tiberius Caesar, and include a long letter from Pontius Pilate to his superior, Emperor Tiberius of Rome - Pilate alludes to encountering a philosopher named Jesus, and relates the events that culminated in the death of Christ.

In the modern day, scholars consider the Acta Pilate to date from a later time than the life of Jesus, with most agreeing that the 4 th century AD is the probable period of origin.
