Reissued to mark the fortieth anniversary of the }Virago Modern Classics{ series, this novel came about from the authors doctor suggesting that she write about her experiences in mental institutions to free herself from them, with the fictionalised account that followed achieving an authenticity that saw it taught in medical schools.
