Undeterred, Spunk shoots Joe dead and moves in with his widow.

But when a bobcat begins to circle their house, Spunk becomes convinced that Joe has returned from the dead to avenge him.

Zora Neale Hurstons short story was published in the Opportunity, A Journal of Negro Life in 1925, and later won second place in the journals fiction writing contest.

Spunk was also selected for publication in The New Negro , helping to secure Hurstons successful career as a writer.
