Hyde might represent one of the first literary memes, dropping into the western canon like a bombshell.

It rooted itself deep into our cultural soil, and remains established there today, 150 years after it was first published.

Ironically, however, the story is as old as Adam: outwardly good people concealing dark and horrible secrets.

No need to single out the murderers however, upon introspection each of us learn that in one way or another, we all have a Jekyll and we all have a Hyde.

Robert Louis Stevenson fixed our attention on this dramatic fact, and its deep truth does not allow us to ever look away.
